Best Book I Ever Read About Internet Marketing as a Lifestyle

by Ed on 17th January 2012

Over the last 12 months I’ve noticed a marked increase in the number of small business owners who want to ‘escape’ from their business, either because they’re nearing retirement, or are struggling to keep their business afloat. Or because they’ve built a business they’ve ended up hating!

When people tell me they want to make money online — but not with any reference to their current business… well that’s not something I focus on, so I usually refer them to other people and resources.

One such resource is a book I read over Christmas . It’s one of the best I’ve ever read on the subject of how to earn passive income and live the ‘Internet Marketing Lifestyle’ so I wanted to quickly let you know about it.

Get Out While You Can – Escape The Rat Race so far has 158 four and five star reviews on Amazon, for a good reason.

The author — U.K. based Internet Marketer George Marshall – explains multiple business models, with the key focus being affiliate marketing — where you earn commission by creating Google-friendly websites that promote other people’s products and services.

I have done very little in terms of teaching or advocating affiliate marketing. It’s certainly not my core strategy (which involves list building using lead pages, and then e-mail marketing the list.)

However, as a business model I think affiliate marketing definitely holds a lot of appeal to the people who fall into one of the three categories I touched at the beginning of this article.

In his book George does an excellent job of explaining affiliate marketing in layman’s terms. And for more advanced marketers, it’s still a highly enjoyable read and contains dozens of references to useful resources and clever tricks of the trade.

However, there are the two big reasons why I like the book so much, and am unreservedly recommending it…

1) It’s honest.

George doesn’t talk about ‘Get Rich Quick’, or even ‘Get Rich Slow’ for that matter.

He explains how to create lots of small websites, each one of which earns a small amount of income, that over time build up to generate £60,000 a year or more.

Certainly not riches, but for anyone who is looking for a way to ‘escape the rat race’ as he puts it — that extra income will be a more than welcome addition to their bank balance.

While I’ve heard about this strategy before, what separates George from many other marketers who do this is that he advocates creating web sites that contain genuinely useful content – they’re not what I would call ‘junk content sites’ that unfortunately flood the Internet these days.

His book also contains numerous examples and links to actual sites he’s built, and he gives an insight into how much he actually earns from them. It’s an uncommonly candid account of ‘real’ Internet Marketing and the results you can expect.

Secondly, and critically

(2) His book doesn’t just tell you what to do, it tells you HOW to do it.

In my own books I’ve always tried to not just explain what needs to be done, but also how to do things. In George’s book he’s done a brilliant job in this respect.

I could go on about how great his book is but at the end of the day it’s only £12.74 — not exactly a big deal if you’re already interested in Internet Marketing!

If you want to escape the rat race then grab a copy now, and I hope you enjoy it as much as I did.

Bye for now,
Ed

P.S. I don’t talk about the Internet Marketing Lifestyle much. Is this a topic you’d like me to talk about more in future? Leave a comment below and let me know - if enough people comment then I’ll cover this topic more in future.  Thx.

I will certainly look at this book, not because I fit into the categories you mentioned, but because my business would benefit from some affiliate marketing with other related companies. Not from the get-rich-quick-selling-pages-of-flannel-and-ads angle, but because I deal with lots of people who are all quite niche and none of us have a huge product range, so working together we can provide a wider product range for our customers.

A lot of the advice out there about affiliate marketing tends to be very veered towards the get-rich-quick motivations and I am very anti the whole idea of filling cyberspace with useless content just to sell ad space. I do a lot of research online and these formulaic pages make surfing very frustrating and slow.

For which reason I would not personally be interested in you doing loads of content on the “Internet Marketing Lifestyle” end of things. There are lots of people out there covering it, and most of them are selling internet marketing content about how to do internet marketing about doing internet marketing… the whole thing is a bit self cannibalising. However covering the same skillset but for someone who has an actual product, information content or skill to sell, would be VERY useful, because it’s a different slant. A lot of the advice is about selling more advice and sometimes it is hard to see how you can apply it to a business with a physical product or selling expertise about something other than the internet itself. So, yes and no please!

I will check out the book though.
And thanks for the recent advice about malware… oops!

      >> most of them are selling internet marketing content about how to
do internet marketing about doing internet marketing… the whole thing
is a bit self cannibalising. <<

Amen to that! It's one reason why I've shied away from the whole 'Internet Lifestyle topic.'

So far you're the only person who has voted – and yours was a vote for me not doing it. So, it looks like I'll keep the lifestyle topic as a 'one off topic', not something to mention often.

We're definitely both on the same page regards those 'orrible junk sites that flood the Internet. (Like I say, George Marshall's approach is a far better alternative.)

Thanks for sharing your feedback, and while I'm here – George and Henry still regularly ask for the Foodies as their preferred night-time stories, so again thank you for that.

      All my best,
      Ed.

Hi Ed my name is Paul this is the first time i have posted to anyone and to be honest haven’t read all your stuff but will now,
my reply really was to agree about George Marshall’s book it is the best book I have read and like most of us have bookshelves full, I have been trying to start internet business for years and keep going back to the day job but this book make things easy to understand and gives you a kick and when I am setup I would use it as affiliate too good for George and good for us, many thanks Ed.

Hi Paul, thanks for your comments. Great to hear you like the book as much as I do! :-)

  • Gavin Alinson

Ed did you setup the amazon book review as an amazon affiliate to demonstrate what you learnt in the book?

Yes it sounds interesting especially about creating sites that ad value instead of fly by night junky adsense type sites which are always going to have a prescribed shelf life.

Aha! I was wondering if anyone would notice that. :-)

I’ve had an Amazon affiliate account for ages but other than a few minor forays not done much with it. It’ll be interesting to see how many people take my recommendation and buy the book through that link.

(I probably should say for anyone else reading these comments — and I’m sure you know me enough to know this — I only promote stuff as an affiliate that I’ve personally used and know work effectively (which incidentally is why I waited until I lost a stone in weight before I endorsed your Four Week Fat loss programme! ;)

Hope that’s going well by the way.

      Speak soon,
      Ed.

P.S. I’m at Twickenham on 25th Feb. (Not playing, just spectating. Ho ho.)

Ed, can’t thank you enough for signposting me to this book.  We spent the whole weekend brainstorming ideas from it.  I have to say it’s the biz.  I don’t understand why some sour-puss people give it a thumbs-down on Amazon; I guess they just don’t want to think they might be success-stories themselves as a result of the honesty of this author’s gift of saying it straight.

Me, I’m keeping this one within arm’s reach.  Really, thanks so much.

    Max

      Hey you’re welcome Max!

Yes it’s sad to see some of the comments on Amazon — not sad for the author, but sad for the people leaving those comments… because I’m quite certain they’ll “dis” anything that’s genuine and yet which requires focus, discipline and effort, and continue their fruitless search for the non-existent Silver Bullet, wasting years of their lives and a tonne of money in the process. I suppose the most suitable adage is “You can lead a horse to water, but…  … …”   ;)

      Speak soon,
      Ed.
