Statistics for my latest ad campaign

by Ed on 26th February 2010

As promised here’s a behind the scenes view of my latest ad campaign.

If you have any questions about this please leave a comment below and I’ll try and answer then on Monday.

Also — I’ve never run a live webinar before, where you watch my computer screen live over the Internet, but if you like the if you like the idea of joining me on a one hour webinar to see exactly how to set one of these campaigns up for yourself then leave a comment below, or email me on support@strategicwebprofits.com and let me know. Thanks.

If enough people ask for a webinar then I’ll hold one next week hopefully, and really show you the full inside scope on how to set all this up for your own business.

So without further ado, here’s the video which reveals how I got a staggering 93.1% conversion rate, and added an extra 591 subscribers and active sales-leads to my email database.

Hope the video has worked okay for you?

Have a great weekend,
Ed.

P.S. The site mentioned in my video is www.LeadPageMachine.com — I used that software to automatically generate the lead page which got 93.1% conversion.

P.P.S. I’m also considering launching a ‘done-for-you’ lead page service, where my team will setup the system shown in this video. Are you interested in that? If so email us on support@strategicwebprofits.com and let me know. Thanks.

    Useful video Ed… I noticed you had a high bounce rate in Google Analytics though – any explanation for this? It doesn’t correlate with your conversion rate!

    Very interested in a webinar next week – let me know if you get around to setting it up!

  • http://everyoneagreeswithTOM.com Ross Page

    Yes please, would love to see a live webinar!

    Cheers

    Very nice Ed….thanks for sharing this. I first found you in fsb mag and bought ‘Ultimate Guide’ which is thumbed to death. Then I found P.G. went on his seminar, did some mentoring got on J.J’s list and seeing good results. Thanks again for all you do.

    Thanks Ed – as usual you overdeliver and I think your webinar idea is a good one.

    Look forward to it as I’m sure others would appreciate it too.

    Ed,

    Great content as always. Webinar is a great idea. Do you know of a less expensive squeeze page for word press? I use the thesis theme.

    Thanks
    Nat

  • http://www.TWAcademy.Org Tim

    Great vid Ed. Actually been searching for provider that can allow me to do similar on screen presentation as you have done. Was thinking of offering user guide for some of my sites, etc.

    Count me in for webinar.

    Hope you guys are having a great weekend!

    Regards, Tim

    P.S. ‘Toddler Soccer – The Essential Guide’ has been published!!! Lex has done a super job & we have it on Amazon! They are just awaiting their copy of book before changing status guide on screen.

    The webinar idea sounds good Ed but if you have never run one before who is the expert who is going to be teaching us?

  • http://www.outsourcesuccess.com Gavin Allinson

    It seems pretty costly Ed at £4.72 a click ( £3000 divided by 683 visitors) granted it is very targetted contacts.

    I’m pretty sure you could get traffic using adwords a lot cheaper than that.

    At the end of the day you can’t knock it if it ends up as a self liquidating offer.

    Also adwords can help you split test the different headlines to come up with a winner.

    great work Ed

    Has got me thinking for different promotions I can run.

    Gavin

  • http://www.backpain.com.au steve

    Hey Ed, so you paid nearly 5 pounds for a name and email address, how do you think that would have compared if you had used google adwords to generate the clicks? Would the demographic have been different with GA and have you already run this same offer page linked to a GA campaign yet?

    Obviously the advantage of that would be a much less expensive commitment to test it but if it worked well on GA would you expect it to work better in a print campaign or about the same?

    Cheers
    Steve

  • http://www.integral-networks.co.uk Paul

    Good to see that you practice what you teach Ed.

    I can see the point of £5.00 per lead, but i can also see your point, that these leads are very qualified and have a direct interest in the type of services you offer.

    I am not a betting man, but i would like to bet that the repeat business(back end) from your ongoing marketing to these leads and the life time value to you will outweigh the initial time and investment spent.

    If you could share the short term and long term results of this campaign and how you measured these figures, i would be interested to view them.

    Webinar sounds great.

    Quick question – do you just place the landing page separate from your main site/blog, just to measure the results?

  • http://www.spiceuk.com Dave Smith

    Really helpful Ed – fantastic example of relationship marketing and walking the walk – I’d be very interested in attending a webinar to hear more.

    Enjoyed the video and YES we would like to see a live webinar.

    We would be interested in the webinar particularly if it was during the day. Phil D

    Hi

    I enjoyed the video. Reference some of the comments above about using Adwords as an alternate, I’m in a market where google adwords can never provide all my lead opportunities. As an example, no matter how many google adverts I see promoting a book, I’d never buy that via route. All my book purchases come from articles in newspapers, magazines or direct emails. On that basis, I’m interested in a webinar.

    As an FSB member, there were two printed adverts I responded two this month; yours and an accountancy package. If only they had learned your lessons about creating a specific quality landing page.

  • http://www.dhlhomefurnishings.co.uk Dennis Laker

    Hi
    Webinar is agreat idea. I was just wondering – the excellent demonstrations you give are very much focused on services – can you include anything more related to retail ?

    Thanks

    Hiya ed. Great tutorialistic video as always. Would love an invite to the webinar please. Ta. C.

    would love to be signed up for the webinar ed….

    Cheers

    Good presentation, Ed. In fact, I’ve just invested in some software (called Screenflow on the Mac) to produce just this kind of thing for my computing tuition clients.

    I’ve been involved in the Web for a long time and I’m very interested in your method of setting up dedicated websites and landing pages for specific results. This goes against the grain of standard website design which often attempts to be a catch-all: your ‘spear fishing’ evidently produces remarkable results compared to traditional ‘trawling’. I shall certainly be re-thinking my own websites, and advising my own clients accordingly, including referring them to your site.

    The cost-per-click issue is an interesting one. Whilst that fiver may sound expensive (though the more visitors you continue to get, the lower that figure tumbles), I agree with Paul’s comment above that your targeting of the original ad in very business-focused publications, as opposed to the scattergun of, say, a national newspaper, makes this a reasonable price to pay with such enormous potential for future sales.

    I’m certainly interested in a webinar and am happy to be a ‘guinea pig’ whilst you hone your skills. I also wanted to commend you for “E-Mail Marketing Dynamite”, which I have to say I have found to be the most informative collection of tips under one cover that I have ever found on the subject — well done!

  • Nitin Shreyakar

    Hi Ed,

    Great stuff. Would like to learn more by watching webinar.

    Many thanks,
    Nitin

  • http://www.edrivis.com Ed

    @Rob Jones – thanks. Hi bounce rate was due to the post opt-in being on a different website so everyone “bounced” off the site when they filled in the form. (Well spotted! ;-)

    @Ross Page – Webinar on it’s way thanks for your interest :-)

    @Mike Herberts – Great to hear about your results… that’s what it’s all about!

    @Paul – Webinar on it’s way thanks for your interest :-)

    @Neil – Webinar on it’s way thanks for your interest :-)

    @Graham – Webinar on it’s way thanks for your interest :-)

    @Chris – Webinar on it’s way thanks for your interest :-)

    @Brian – Thanks, I’ll keep churning! :-)

    @Nat – I don’t use WordPress for squeeze pages… I roll my own, especially now I’ve created my own lead page generation software at http://www.LeadPageMachine.com

    @Tim – I use http://www.Camtasia.com for screen capture videos and http://www.screencast.com to host the videos — camtasia automatically uploads (FTPs) to the latter so it makes the workflow really quick and easy.

    @Steve – Errr… I’ll be the expert teaching you. (It’s my first webinar, but I “sort of” know what I’ll be talking about on the webinar, if you catch my drift ;-)

    @Gavin Allinson – Absolutely! Even if the front-end cost of the leads was £50 each… the moment they’re self-liquidating they basically havn’t cost *anything*, which means paying to advertise becomes a whole lot easier. Thanks for the comment and I’ll be calling you about something that’s been on the backburner – look forward to speaking again.

    @Steve – Google Adwords can cost me more than £10 per lead, but the key point (as discussed with Gavin above) is that the leads actually haven’t cost me ANYTHING… they’re self-liquidating. Google Adwords wouldn’t have produced the same result becaue people wouldn’t have had as much explanation of me or the offer before arriving on the lead page.

    @Paul – Sharing long term figures is a bit more ‘challenging’ for me… kind of like revealing my inside leg measurements and not all that relevant for most of my readers … lifetime value varies wildly from business to business. Your networking installations business probably has substantial lifetime value customers so you should do wildly well from these type of campaigns.

    @Dave Smith – thanks webinar on it’s way! :-)

    @Socatots Canada – thanks, webinar on it’s way! :-)

    @Phil – thanks webinar on it’s way, and I’ll hold it during the daytime (others asked the same). Thanks.

    @Adrian – yes there are so few businesses who understand this stuff. It’s a big opportunity for the few who do.

    @Dennis Laker – Good point. Retail can use the same approach, but their email markeing may then be sending people onto e-commerce sites or inviting them to visit the ‘high street’ store as well as all the other relationship building email and blog content.

    @Cheryl – thanks webinar on it’s way. :-)

    @Guy – thanks, webinar on it’s way. :-)

    @Henry – As mentioned above, the cost per lead was zero, not a fiver, because of instant sales from the same campaign the advert paid for itself. (Hope I’ve explained that enough?!) Webinar on it’s way, and thank you for the kind words about my book… much appreciated.

    @Nitin – Thanks, webinar on it’s way! :-)

  • http://www.abucon.co.uk liza jones

    Fantastic video – gave so much information and insight into how to run an effective campaign. Yes please, I would love a webinar. Count me in.

  • Phil

    Hey Ed,

    One thing that’s not adding up for me. In GA your bounce rate is 91% which would indicate that nearly all your visitors that landed on your squeeze page bounced off it pretty quickly i.e. left the site (in under 14 seconds) and didn’t opt-in.

    Google defines bounce rate as follows:

    “Bounce rate is the percentage of single-page visits or visits in which the person left your site from the entrance (landing) page. Use this metric to measure visit quality – a high bounce rate generally indicates that site entrance pages aren’t relevant to your visitors.”

    The only way I can see that this metric would be skewed or incorrect would be if you failed to paste the GA tracking code on the conversion page i.e. the second page the visitor arrives at after entering their email. In this case, GA would think that all your visitors had only visited one page, which would explain the high bounce rate.

  • http://www.edrivis.com Ed

    @Liza – Thanks, webinar on it’s way – also I’ve had so many requests I’ve also decided to put on a live seminar too. You should hear about that shortly and I hope to meet you there.

    @Phil – Well spotted!

    The reason for a 91% bounce rate is that the moment they submit their form data (name and email address) on the front page at http://www.emd1.co.uk they’re taken off to a totally different secure website, to take credit card details for the physical paperback book.

    So technically speaking they bounce… but in reality they simply move to the next step of my sales process.

    Hope this clears up the confusion and thanks for bringing this up – maybe other people saw this and were wondering but didn’t ask the question.

  • http://www.outandaboutmags.co.uk Pete
