Public speaking for your organisation?

I was talking in London again last weekend for Jonathan Jay’s Charity Event (raised more than £3,600 for Great Ormand Street.)

Jonathan kindly invited me along to talk as his special guest, and I spoke on Friday afternoon for about 2 hours, (with a short coffee break half-way through), and had a fantastic time.

If you were at the event please leave me some feedback.

How did I do?

My aim was to give you an overview of what I call the ‘Ultimate Web Marketing Strategy’ — uncommon ways small businesses can use the web to generate hundreds if not thousands of new customers or clients — and then also use the web to sell effectively to them on the back end.

I think I did a good job in the short timeframe. But were there any topics you’d want me to cover in more detail? Can you apply it to your business now? And did it all make sense?

As for Jonathan’ presentation (the rest of the two days minus my session) — WOW! I’m sure everyone there will agree he was red hot with practical business building tips and advice.

And at one point he used a special kind of photo-projector to show people’s printed marketing literature on a big screen and did live critiques of those.

In other words, he showed business owners exactly how to transform their literature in to the same kind of literature he used to go from £50,000 debt to millionaire in less than one year.

I’ve never seen that done before, and I don’t think it’s possible to measure the takeaway value people got from that.

Anyway, one thing I’ve realised more than ever — I love public speaking!

I’m already looking forward to the next chance to do it.

    VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH ED’S PRESENTATION

    I was at Jonathan Jay’s Charity Event last weekend. It was a great even, but I can tell you I felt misled by ED. He opened by saying he wasn’t a public speaker and apologising if he didn’t give a good presentation.

    There I was expecting another dull ‘Internet Geek’ waffling on about stuff that he barely understands, and assuming it was a good time for an afternoon snooze!

    Well, I’m delighted to say how ‘disappointed’ I was … Ed’s presentation was fantastic!

    Over the last ten years have attended many seminars on marketing … I’ve even attempted to stay awake at some Internet Marketing seminars (mostly failing). But with Ed’s presentation it was very different … and he was able to explain what he did and how it could make a difference for everyone!

    A friend of mine Dean Graziosi (www.deangraziosi.com), a real estate investing expert from Arizona, has been on TV in America with his infomercials every day since 1999 … and when I asked him advise about speaking in front of the camera or the public he said “you have to know and love your subject and you deliver it from the heart … or it will be false”.

    I can honestly say Ed’s presentation was from the heart and came across very well.

    I’d recommend anyone how wants to grow their business to attend ED’s seminars.

    In fact I was so impressed I asked Ed if he would give a ‘Webinar’ for my network at http://www.ecocarpetcare.co.uk as soon as possible and I’ll be asking him to give a presentation at our seminar in the summer (if he’ll do it after the headline on this message).

    @Robert – Blimey you scared the hell out of me with that opening line “VERY DISAPPOINTED” … please don’t do that! I need a stiff Whisky to recover now. (Well, it is Xmas :-) )

    Another Very Disappointed!

    I went to a Jonathon Jay seminar on the 6th December purely because the publicity blurb said you were going to be there Ed – but you weren’t! It was some other web chap I had never heard of. I even took my copy of your book down hoping to get you to sign it…yeah, sad I know, but I wanted to meet you again after speaking with you at Paul Gorman’s LAP 3 course 2 years ago.

    Anyway – next time I hear you are going to speak I will move heaven and earth (well a couple of molehills maybe) to come and listen – but I will check with your PA that you actually are going to be there… once bitten and all that!

    If only the insults aimed at me were more like this!

    I never knew I was good at speaking until I was placed in front of people. I began with a phrase like ‘I’m unaccustomed to public speaking but…’ and at the end someone said it was a good speech and asked how long I took to prepare. I answered truthfully, the 2 hour presentation was without note and off the cuff.

    Of course, people also say I’m long winded.

    Jonathan Jay’s seminar on the 12th/ 13th December in aid of GOSCH was the one to be at. Not only was Jonathan presenting in a red hot fashion but Ed made his debut on the Mic. He presented in a very engaging and open style which was full of useful topics and tips. I agree with Roberts comments above “you have to know and love your subject and you deliver it from the heart … or it will be false”.
    Ed did this and possibly a little more by being himself, I was very disappointed with Eds presentation as it was only two hours. I want more of the info and as soon as possible and I did something I have never done before by signing up on the day for the coaching. The information that Ed gave during the two hours was what every small business owner with a website can use to improve its performance.

    I learned a lot on the weekend with Jonathan Jay, Ed’s presentation taught me a lot in such a short space of time! I am looking forward to implementing the split testing ideas he gave me.

    @Ray – Sorry I missed you. I thought SuccessTrack had removed me from all the publicity blurb well in advance of that event. I’m sorry for the confusion. I can only hope you had plenty of other takewaway value from the event. (Did Peter Thomson cover his ‘Magic Matrix’ system, or Jonathan Jay explain his ‘success formula’? Hope so… powerful stuff.)

    I’d be honoured to sign a book for you, and I hope that (barring any immovable objects) we’re able to meet at an event next year instead!

    @Richard – I know where you’re coming from. I’ve found that contrary to common advice on the subject, the more I prepare my talk the more nervous I get. Also the more polished I am the less people seem to rave, maybe because when it’s off the cuff it’s more natural and, well, demonstrative that one knows a subject very deeply.

    And as for ‘long-winded’… I find that hard to accept!

    @John – You’re very gracious with your comments, and I’m delighted to have you as a coaching client. I look forward to speaking with you early in the New Year… and to helping you implement and benefit from a lot more than just the tactics I covered in those 2 short hours. Roll on 2009!

    @Mike – Thanks for the kind words. With all the positive feedback I’ve had recently I’ve decided to make public speaking a big thing next year. It’s also given me confidence to host my own events next year. At the moment I’m planning on running six in total — 4 seminars and 2 private workshops, all to be announced shortly.

    @Neil – Good luck with the split testing. It’s amazing when you run your first test and suddenly find that by simply changing the words in a headline you can generate significantly more revenues and profits.

    Not bad for a sheep farmer!

    Well, Robert has certainly taken one bit of Ed’s advice. That is the importance of an attention grabbing headline as this headline certainly grabbed my attention.

    Why? Because I was there too, and when I read the headline I thought, “How on earth can this guy be disappointed with Ed’s presentation?” His presentation was straight to the point with practical easy-to-use information without any of the geeky gobbledygook that so many internet savvy people seemed compelled to use. And how refreshing not to have so much emphasis put on SEO.

    I think all tactics that Ed covered on 12th are things that I could use in my business but for me the most important bit of advice was the importance of having a strategy and integrating it with the whole of your marketing strategy. I could have done with this advice three years ago and probably saved myself a shed load of money and time.

    Ed, the answer your questions -Yes, It all made perfect sense. Yes, I can definitely apply in my business (landing page just actioned), and No, this at stage I would not have wanted any more detail, and to be frank I don’t think in the time you had available you could’ve covered any more than you did. All worthwhile little nuggets of gold.
