Get more done in less time: Cool software recommendation.

by Ed on 20th May 2009

I don’t normally email about time management. but I’ve found a piece of inexpensive software that’s SO good I had to tell you about it.

I’ve been using The Action Machine for a few weeks now, and it’s boosted my productivity by what I can only guess is hundreds of percent.

How it works is incredibly simple.

You give it a list of things you want to accomplish today, set a deadline for each task (rounded up to the nearest 15 minutes). Then it displays those tasks all on a screen with a timer underneath each one.

Then all you do is pick a task, start the timer and get working in it. You can click to pause the task timer, but I’ve found the best way to use it is to keep working on each task, relentlessly, until you finish it.

And when the task timer beeps to say the time’s up… that’s it. You don’t do any more on that task.

Now the relentless focus — and the fact you’re ‘not allowed’ to spend any more time on that specific task — is a powerful way of making sure you don’t fall foul of Parkinson’s Law, which states “Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion.”

In other words the more time you have available to do something, the longer that task takes to complete. I find that a lot — which is why for me The Action Machine has made such a big difference to the way I work.

It’s incredibly simple, seriously effective software. I love it.

A lot of modern office and productivity software is suffering from ‘feature bloat’… where developers throw in lots of features you don’t need and never use so they can put a higher price tag on it. The Action Machine doesn’t suffer any of that. It does one thing, and one thing very well.

Check it out and see what a difference it can make to your day too!

Hi Ed: This software sounds exactly what I need to keep me on track.
I will indeed check it out and most likely purchase it. Good job on the review.

    Hi Ed

What I find/found funny is the link you provide to read more how it works ends up on a mile long landing page.
Your short explanation told it much more to the point: this is it, this how it works, these are the benefits. The video does add value to the story, but all in all – to me – the page itself is almost in contradiction of what’s on offer: saving us time ;-)
    Program does look effective though.

I have purchased it right away. Hope you also get some commission, Ed. :-) By the way analyzing THIS sales process, why was it so successful? Your endorsement, the sales copy, the product, the price, … All together?

@Lucy – Good question. I’ll try and remember to email the developer and ask him when the Mac version’s due! (The software’s developed using Macromedia Flash so I’m guessing a Mac version is possible.)

    @Sharon – Thanks. It’s made a huge difference to me so I think you’ll like it. Happy Time-boxing!! ;-)

@Karin – ha ha I hadn’t realised the irony there! (Obviously the reason for the long landing page… we both know the more you tell the more you sell. If my link had sent straight to Clickbank then people who needed more explanation in order to make judgment on if it’s for them or not would have been left cold.) Funny though!

@Peter – Yes I’ll get some commission so thank you for that. The software IS awesome though… and I think a Six Sigma expert will especially love the productivity gains ;-)

As for the sales process… do you mean my review here?

I’m not sure how many sales it’s generated yet (apart from yours) and the commission’s not major — but I think the developer’s landing page is very effectively written, and he’s got some big name marketers promoting it… so definitely a lot to learn there.

Side note: Anyone with a big email list can do simple reviews like the one I did above, and earn some nice extra commissions. For me though where I differ from a lot of affiliate marketers online is that I only ever recommend stuff I personally use, which means I don’t promote brand new products that are only just being released because that means I haven’t had time to use it personally — I’d never recommend software I didn’t believe in and use myself 100%. Personal preference I guess.

    Thanks for all your comments.

    Hi Ed,
Sounds a good idea apart from…
Select a task, start a timer (like an egg time), and focus on nothing but accomplishing that task. This means you don’t answer the phone……..If I didn’t answer the ‘phone, I most likely wouldn’t have any work to do as all my work comes either via email or ‘phone.

Oh, and I wouldn’t have time to read your blogs!!!

Spooky coincidence! I just bought this software and have been using it for the last few weeks. I learned from Eban Pagan that the key to managing your time is to minimise distractions and interruptions. This will help you do that, but you still have to have the dicipline to keep your head down. Recommended.

    Hi Ed

I agree of course on ‘the more you tell, the more you sell’ – but I prefer Jeff Walker’s approach of the Horizontal Sales Letter: spreading your eggs over more baskets and building up trust. But that’s me, I always run out of paper when I’m telling stories to my prospects ;-)

@Chris – I probably shouldn’t, but if I dare comment… it sounds like you have a scalability issue in your business? Is there only *you* who can answer the phone? Can’t you delegate or even outsource that function? If not, (and it would be a very unusual circumstance where it can’t through training and such like) then you’d be able to use your egg timer and take advantage of the time boxing principle. Let me know if you want me to recommend a telephone answering service.

@Jonathan – Great to hear from you! Would be great to speak sometime – I’d love to catch up, hear how you’re doing and also about Eben’s Time Management programme… I think he’s awesome and I’ll bet his programme is excellent.

@Karin – Totally agree, (the only difference here was that I linked to his sales letter not his squeeze page).

    Thanks for all your comments.

    Re Chris

I’ve got the same ‘problem’ as you: my timer would constantly be paused the minute a client walks into our little showroom ;-)
Not a scalability problem, just the method we opted for. You just cannot plan, strictly time everything that needs to be done. But like I said, not complaining, still think I’ve got the best job in the world and love my flexibility in switching tasks. ;-) (One of the reasons I always have two or three ‘projects’ on the go)

Sure the program works excellent for those who have an uninterrupted working environment.
